Rare Art Nouveau Ceramic Floor with Decorative Borders

Currently in France and soon to be shipped to The French Antique Tile Company

A beautifully reclaimed early 20th century ceramic floor of approximately 133 sq ft, produced by the Belgian manufacturer Societe Anonyme des Produits Ceramiques St Remy, Chimay and reverse stamped “P C S R”. Featuring soft tones of sage green, blue and grey, the design captures the flowing elegance typical of the Art Nouveau period. For provenance the original catalog presentation of the tiles by the manufacturer is included within the gallery.

The floor includes both field and border tiles measuring approximately 5.9 inches square, with the borders originally laid in a double formation, back to back. They may also be installed as a single border if preferred, extending the usable run. Suitable for interior or exterior use, the tiles are approximately 0.6 inches thick and remain in excellent antique condition, with only minor age-related wear and small chips consistent with reclaimed materials, all groutable and adding to the charm and beauty of their antique patina. The photogaphs are of a randomly selected section of the complete floor.

We can assist, without obligation, in advising on the layout of the floor in your chosen area and can produce technical floor plans for ease of installation. An example of such a plan is shown in the gallery.

Tile Quantities

Field Tiles – 415 tiles – approximately 101 sq ft
Border Tiles – 123 tiles plus corner tiles – approximately 31.8 sq ft / 32.2 linear ft*

* Linear coverage approximately doubles when laid as a single border.

Our antique tiles were originally handmade in single or two tile molds. Pre-computer fabrication these molds were machined by hand & the colour slips to create the tile were mixed by measure and eye. When firing the tiles, the kiln temperatures of c.1,100F degrees could also be variable. The result of this production process is that tiles made during this period of non-automation often display subtle size & thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colors, all of which add to their charm and uniqueness. When photographing a floor, we always take a random section so that it is representative of the whole in tones and patina.

A rigorous quality control during the restoration process will include in the sale any tiles with groutable small chips and edge nibbles, expected of tiles more than 100 years old, but include for free any with larger defaults as rejects, which the tiler can then use for offcuts.
