An Elegant Belgian Art Nouveau Ceramic Floor - 183 sq ft.

Currently in France and soon to be shipped to The French Antique Tile Company

An elegant early 20th century Belgian ceramic floor of approximately 183 sq ft, produced by Société Anonyme La Nouvelle Ceramique AMAY Belgique and recently restored, arriving ready for relaying. Rich in Art Nouveau character, the design combines stylised floral forms and geometric symmetry in a palette of soft blue, sage green, vieux rose, charcoal and off-white.

The 5.5 inch square field tiles create a repeating decorative motif, while the half-size and full-size borders provide a beautifully structured frame. All original border corners are present, allowing the floor to retain its complete period composition.

Highly fired and durable, the tiles are suitable for both interior and exterior settings and are also compatible with underfloor heating. The floor remains in very good antique condition, with only minor age-related wear and small groutable chips visible on a limited number of tiles.

Tile Quantities

Field Tiles – 700 tiles – approximately 151 sq ft
Large Borders – 100 tiles plus 4 corners – approximately 21.5 sq ft / 47.8 linear ft
Half-Size Borders – 90 tiles plus 4 corners – approximately 9.7 sq ft / 41.3 linear ft

Our antique tiles were originally handmade in single or two tile molds. Pre-computer fabrication these molds were machined by hand & the colour slips to create the tile were mixed by measure and eye. When firing the tiles, the kiln temperatures of c.1,100F degrees could also be variable. The result of this production process is that tiles made during this period of non-automation often display subtle size & thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colors, all of which add to their charm and uniqueness. When photographing a floor, we always take a random section so that it is representative of the whole in tones and patina.

A rigorous quality control during the restoration process will include in the sale any tiles with groutable small chips and edge nibbles, expected of tiles more than 100 years old, but include for free any with larger defaults as rejects, which the tiler can then use for offcuts.
