Early Art Deco Ceramic with Original Borders - 194 sq ft.

Currently in France and soon to be shipped to The French Antique Tile Company

A beautifully preserved Belgian ceramic floor dating from around 1918–1920, of approximately 194 sq ft and retaining both its original full-size and half-size borders. Manufactured by Société Anonyme Céramiques Modernes Rebaix and reverse stamped “R”, the floor is illustrated in the company’s original catalogue, a scan of which is included within the gallery along with an image of their original factory, long since closed.

The design captures the transitional character of early Art Deco, blending decorative elegance with emerging geometric styling. The 6.3 inch square field tiles form repeating diamond motifs with subtle dragonfly-inspired detailing in cream, green and black, while the contrasting borders introduce floral and Greek key influences that frame the composition beautifully.

The photographs are of a randomly selected section of the floor, which displays a warm antique character; minor edge nibbles and small groutable chips are present in places, consistent with age and all adding to the charm and uniqueness of a century old floor now restored, ready to re-lay and good for another century. At approximately 0.6 inches thick and highly fired, the ceramics are suitable for both interior and exterior settings, including use with underfloor heating.

Note:-

Our antique tiles were originally handmade in single or two tile molds. Pre-computer fabrication these molds were machined by hand & the colour slips to create the tile were mixed by measure and eye. When firing the tiles, the kiln temperatures of c.1,100F degrees could also be variable. The result of this production process is that tiles made during this period of non-automation often display subtle size & thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colors, all of which add to their charm and uniqueness. When photographing a floor, we always take a random section so that it is representative of the whole in tones and patina.

A rigorous quality control during the restoration process will include in the sale any tiles with groutable small chips and edge nibbles, expected of tiles more than 100 years old, but include for free any with larger defaults as rejects, which the tiler can then use for offcuts.
